Empis opaca

Empis opaca is the most common Dance Fly in most parts of Western Europe. But it behaves more inconspicuously and is thus not seen as often as Empis tesselata is. The animals are very similar, but look at the thighs. Empis tesselata has black thighs, while those of Empis opaca are orange reddish. Empis opaca is not that big, some 6 to 9 millimeters long. It too is regularly seen sucking nectar from flowers.
