Hydrophoria lancifer

Hydrophoria lancifer is a greyish brown or yellowish brown hairy fly. The length usually is some 8 mm, but this species is quite variable in length and may measure anything between 4 and 11 mm. The wings are yellowish at the base. The legs are dark, except for a yellow part on the tibia. Larvae live in the dung of various mammals. Adult flies are on the wing from mid-April to the end of September. A fairly common and wide spread species all over England and Wales.

Because there are some look-a-likes there is no absolute certainty about the animal in the pictures. However it is very unlikely to be another species than Hydrophoria lancifer. The best scientific name would therefor be Hydrophoria cf. lancifer.
