Notidobia ciliaris
Notidobia ciliaris is another all black species. It does look like Mystacides niger a lot, but there are differences. It has much shorter antennae, which are not ringed. It lacks the striking palps of the previous species. Except for the last pair, the legs are black as well. There is a very small light spot near the under edge of the wing. The adults are seen in May and June. The larvae build a case from sand. The case is slightly bent en extremely smooth. The larvae feed by filtring small particles out of the water. An uncommon species all over Europe, even rare in Holland and Britain.
