Strophosoma capitatum

This small weevil belongs to a genus with lots of small similar weevils. The Nut-leaf Weevil looks just like it, but the black line on the seam of the shields is lacking. It is Strophosoma capitatum, a variable species. Sometimes it is unicoloured (usually grey or brownish). But most of the time it shows a lot of smaller or bigger white or light greyish spots, also on the neck shield. Strophosoma capitatum often appears together with Strophosoma melanogrammum and has about the same kind of life cycle. In forestry it is considered to be a pest as well. Is also considered to be harmful in Hazels. Be careful identifying this species though. It has a look alike: Strophosoma retusum.
