Tipula luna

Tipula luna can be told apart from other Tipula species, when you take all of the following characterics into account. The upperside of the body is grey with three black bands. One on each side and one in the middle. The one in the middle however may consist of not connected dots or small lines. The underside of the body is quite white, contrasting sharply with the black bands on the sides. There is no black stripe on the head. In the wings is a clear white marking. Tipula luna measures some 20 mm. This is a species of moist soils, such as peets, marshes and banks. It is a common species all over Britain. Is present in Europe, Northern Africa and Western Asia.
