Xylota segnis

Xylota segnis behaves differently from most other species on this page. It is rarely seen on flowers. In stead it eats honey dew, the sweet substance excreted by aphids. It usually sucks it up from leaves. That's why we see the creature regularly walking on leaves. In Holland alone there are 9 species of Xylota. Characteristic for this species is a row of hairs on the thigh of the hind leg. The larvae live in dead soft wood, often just behind the bark.
